Head Gasket Repair

Head Gasket Repair in Riverside, CA

What is the Head Gasket?

The head gasket is a mechanical seal located between the engine block and cylinder head. In addition to serving as a seal for the internal combustion process, the head gasket prevents coolant and motor oil from mixing.

How Much Does Head Gasket Repair Cost?

A head gasket is one of the more expensive car parts to replace, with good reason. While the head gasket itself can cost anywhere from $10 to $400 depending on your vehicle, the labor involved requires precision and time. This is not a service that should be rushed.

In order to replace a head gasket, the technician must remove a good portion of the engine. After head gasket installation, everything must be reinstalled to correct specifications. It is imperative that the technician set components to the proper torque settings for the seal to hold. Other aspects, like engine timing, must also be set correct.

3 Signs of a Blown Head Gasket

Here are three, common symptoms of a blown head gasket:

  • Fuel & Coolant or Oil Mix: Motor oil and coolant should never mix with fuel, as this can cause extensive engine damage. If you notice white smoke from your exhaust system, you may have a mixture between the coolant and your fuel. Blue smoke is a sign that you have a fuel and motor oil mix.
  • Engine Misfires: If your engine misfires, it means it's not running through the full combustion process properly. You might feel bucking or other problems that cause the car to run less efficiently. A misfire can be caused by a blown head gasket.
  • Coolant & Oil Mix: When the head gasket fails at separating coolant and oil, you'll notice your oil has a milky brown look to it.

Some problems overlap with other automotive part failures. A technician will need to inspect your vehicle to identify the cause and type of repair needed. A cracked cylinder head or warped gasket are other possibilities.

What Causes a Blown Head Gasket?

A head gasket can fail for different reasons. Some common ones include:

  • Overheating: An overheating engine may cause the head gasket to expand and lose its seal. The best way to prevent overheating is to monitor coolant levels and replace coolant as necessary and directed by your owner's manual.
  • Manufacturer Defect: Some head gasket designs aren't as hardy and result in failure.
